February 19-March 1 2026
The classic Colombian experience on the beautiful Orinoco River! Enjoy 5 or 7 days of fishing the incomparable Orinoco Falls for trophy Payara along with world class Peacock Bass fishing on the Tomo or Tuparro Rivers.
In partnership with FishColombia, this trip has excellent Payara, Sardinata, and catfishing on the first leg of the journey followed by world class Peacock Bass fishing during the second leg. Lodging has a fan and cot along with excellent food prepared by a trained chef. No it’s not a luxury lodge but comfortable and in a truly wild & beautiful location. Caiman, tons of birds, howler monkeys, and pink dolphins are sure to join along parts of the journey. This is world class jungle fishing!’
Starting on the Orinoco River for Payara, you’ll be rock hopping and fishing the incomparable Orinoco Falls. This is a 3.5 mile WIDE series of rapids with islands everywhere. The explorer Alexander Humbolt called this the 8th natural wonder of the world while exploring this region in the early 1800s! Your boat will take you from rock-to-rock, island-to-island to fish deep and fast water for aggressive Payara. Mostly in the 5-10lb range with chances of catching a 20lber, these powerful fish use the rapid to their advantage after savage attacks. For more details on how to fish for Payara, click here.
The other days will be filled with Peacock fishing in the Tomo and/or Tuparro rivers. With 3 species of peacocks in both river systems, you’re sure to have an amazing experience. The largest of the species is the Temensis, or 3-bar. These can reach 15+ lbs but most of the catches will be the Pinta Lapa adolescent variation in the 3-6lb range. Supplimenting these large targets are two beautiful species, the Intermedia or Royal Peacocks and the Mariposa or Butterfly Peacocks. All species are uniquely colored and fight hard! Other possible species to catch are the Black Pacu, Bicudas, Dogtooth Characin, Jamu/Matrinxa, and any number of catfish, which do occasionally take flies. Spin fisherman are welcome too with all these species but particularly good for catfish. I personally bring a catfish rod for evening catfishing although everything else is flyfishing for me.
This trip never disappoints! Just remember that you are in Colombia…so be flexible and safe…its wild out here! Nervous about the dangers of the jungle, click here. For a detailed gear list perfect for this trip, see my gear guide and for FishColombia’s details on the trip, click here.
