My Story
Some of my first memories as a child was a backcountry fishing trip when I was 5 years old in the Uinta Mountains of Utah. The trip was an annual pilgrimage for my family and throughout he remainder of my childhood I would look forward to that week in the mountains more than Christmas. We used a spinning reel with a fly and bubble system. I was obsessed. I got my first fly tying kit at the age of 11 followed by my first flyrod at the age of 12 after begging my dad! I would ride my bike to the library and rent VHS tapes on flyfishing then ride down to the Provo River in Utah and put those lessons to use. Self taught and obsessed, my love for flyfishing is just as strong today as it was on those summer afternoons wet-wading on the Provo River as a 12 year old boy.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve had the privilege of flyfishing all around the world for many different species. However, when I fished the jungle for the first time, I was dumbfounded. How did more people not know about these species?! Why are there not many flies on the market for Payara’s and large Peacock Bass?! As I began tying flies to target these magnificent fish, I became obsessed with pioneering new styles and patterns.
Now I’m on a mission to get more people flyfishing for these amazing sport fish with the best possible patterns. Patterns that get to the right depth, improve hook up rates, and attract that trophy jungle species! I’m super proud of what I’ve created and happy to share my knowledge and flies with you!
My name is Brian Beckstead. I live in Heber, Utah with my wife and three kids (yes they all fish too!). I am the co-founder of Altra Footwear, the best running and hiking footwear on the planet. Although Altra’s my day job, my evenings are filled with fly tying and weekends are spent chasing trophy fish!
